Character Development

The initial rough sketches created from simple abstract shapes. Pom-Pom's design is comprised of mainly ovals, giving it a soft, round, 'cute' appearance. Fade's design, on the other hand, is comprised mainly of long cylinders, giving it a more realistic and humanoid appearance.

This is the first character I created, a small semi-anthropomorphic dragon named Pom-Pom. Taking the majority of the character sheet is the initial character design, on the right are a variety of facial expressions and below are a few rough sketches of different poses/positions. The finalised character designs/sheets are below.

Final Character Designs

(Notes read: "Name: Pom-Pom. Dragon hatchling. Communicates through waving his tail and babbling. Will not leave his shell! Gender: Bigender (male/demifemale)")

This is an updated design for Pom-Pom; the alterations had to be made to ease the animation process. I essentially turned him into a dragon that was too shy to fully hatch and so stayed inside the egg, with only his tail visible. This will also add to the comedy of the animation, as he inexplicably knows what is happening around him despite not being able to see or hear any of it.

Above are the key frames for a turnaround animation of Pom-Pom (see below) hatching from their egg. More frames (if possible) will be added at a later point, as will a colour scheme.

The updated and coloured keyframes for Pom-Pom's turnaround animation, created using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

The second character I designed, Fade Haivyttaa (pronounced 'high-vee-tah') is my first attempt at creating a humanoid character. The character sheet is laid out in a similar way to the previous one, albeit with a wider variety of poses.

This is an animated character turnaround GIF for Pom-Pom's updated design. It was created using Adobe Illustrator and was animated using the animation/keyframe tools in Photoshop.

Below is a short scene from my finished animation, showcasing Pom-Pom's tail and eggshell moving and interacting with the rest of their environment.
